Training

Texas requires 100 hours of CNA training in a state-approved program, including 40 hours of clinical experiences.

Testing

Prometric performs CNA testing in Texas. Qualifications for testing include:

  1. If you are a New Nurse Aide, you must complete a Texas-approved training course within the last 24 months.
  2. If you are a Nurse Aide with Expired Status (Route 5528), you must seek approval from the HHSC for authorization to test.
  3. If you are a Nurse Aide with Equivalent Military Training (Route 5511), you must have completed military training minimum of 100 hours on or after July 1, 1989 and seek approval from the HHSC for authorization to test.
  4. If you are an RN/LVN Graduate (Route 5512), you must complete a state-accredited school of nursing in any state within the
    past twenty-four (24) months and seek approval from the HHSC for authorization to test.
  5. If you are an RN/LVN Student (Route 5513), you must complete basic nursing training within the past twenty-four (24) months and seek approval from the HHSC for authorization to test.
  6. If you are an Out-of-State Trained CNA (Route 5510), you must complete an approved training program in another state within the past twenty-four (24)  month sand seek approval from the HHSC for authorization to test.

Renewal

CNAs in Texas are required to renew their CNA certification every two (2)  years.

There is no cost to renew CNA certification in Texas.

The requirements for renewal are:

  • Candidate must have performed nursing or nursing-related duties in a health care setting during the twenty-four (24) months and completed 24 hours of in-service education since registration or previous renewal no longer need to take the re-test
