Perform Passive Range of Motion to the Shoulder
There are two reasons to do exercises on a patient: regaining function and retaining function. When a CNA is doing exercises on a patient’s shoulder, the goal is not to improve – it is to keep the muscles active and the joint mobile. So, the exercises you are assigned to do will vary with the patient’s needs. The point is….no two sets of exercises will be the same, because no two PATIENTS are the same. So, how do we know what we are supposed to do? Read the care plan!
See that little red button above the video? That is the care plan for the state exam. Click on it. Go ahead, I’ll wait. You are graded on reading and following the care plan – it counts big! This care plan specifically tells us to perform 2 exercises to the left shoulder: flexion/extension and abduction/adduction. No more, no less. And we are to do those exercises 3 times each while ensuring the patient’s comfort. ROM should NEVER hurt the patient. Since this care plan is very specific, following it exactly will determine your grade for the exam. Always read and follow the care plan!
This video shows this skill demonstrated according to the specific testing care plan used by Prometric for the exam.
Why stop at just a video? I have much more to show you!
