Looking for a rewarding career and a steady paycheck?
Looking for a career with potential for growth?
Want to be a respected member of a team?
Need flexible hours?
Enjoy helping others?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, you might want to consider a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). CNA’s assist nurses in performing daily care such as obtaining vital signs, feeding patients, keeping living areas clean, performing personal hygiene, and monitoring for and reporting changes in the patient’s level of health.
If you are considering a career change, now is the time! As baby boomers age, the need for well-trained CNA’s will continue to increase. CNA training is a quick, low-cost way to enter into the healthcare field.
What does the training involve? You will learn subjects like nutrition, anatomy & physiology, customer service, patient rights, HIPAA, infection control, body mechanics and safety as well as learning 21 valuable personal care skills that will enable you to care for your patients safely. The classes can be completed in 3 weeks (day classes) and 4 weeks (night classes).
Once you complete the training, you will have to successfully take the state certification exam. This test consists of two separate parts: written and clinical. The written test is a 60 question, multiple choice exam and must be passed with a 70% or greater score. The clinical exam consists of the testing candidate performing three randomly chosen skills with a Registered Nurse evaluating the quality of the skills. This Registered Nurse is employed by the testing agency, Prometric. Both the written and the clinical component of the test must be passed for a candidate to be considered a CNA. Once the test is passed, the CNA’s license will arrive in the mail.
Once licensed, a CNA can work in a wide variety of settings such as home care, schools, doctor’s offices, correctional facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities, hospitals, outpatient surgery centers and walk-in clinics. Most CNA’s start out at about $22,000 per year. Working nights and weekends pays even more!
Interested in furthering your career? Many CNA’s go on to be Patient Care Technicians or Nurses. You can become a PCT in less than 6 months, an LPN in as little as 10 months and an RN in about 2 years! Hospitals may help pay for the education in exchange for a work commitment!
